Matte is defined as dull, flat, and without shine, but what exactly is a matte sealer? Is it a penetrating sealer or a no-gloss coating? Well, it can be both.
Matte Penetrating Sealers
Penetrating sealers are classified as matte sealers because they won’t change the look or color of the concrete. The concrete will look as it did before being sealed. In many cases you can’t tell that a penetrating sealer has been applied to concrete until you are able to witness some of their performance abilities.

Matte Concrete Coatings
Concrete coatings bond do the surface of the concrete and leave behind a visible surface film. While some coatings are available in matte, others need a matte additive. Coatings naturally have a low to high gloss finish. When a matte additive is added into a coating, it can bring down the performance abilities of the coatings, weaken it. The difference in abilities may not be evident in residential applications, but they become more apparent when used in industrial applications.
